Art Exhibit and Sale at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Mo

These two paintings will be on display and for sale at the Annual Members Exhibit at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Mo. thru the end of February, 2012.

Took the painting up to the museum today and walked thru the current exhibit. On the lower level is a wonderful exhibit of works by William Rose entitled "In Light-Faces & Figures". His rendering of the faces and figures with wonderful lights radiating within are truly a joy to behold. He is a Kansas artist known for his work in figurative works.

This beautiful museum is a small gem of the midwest and well worth your trip.

Painting a Tuscon Scene-A study in planes

This is the finished painting done from a picture provided to me by my sister, Beth. It is of the mountains in Tuscon behind her house.

I have wanted to paint these mountains often, as the light on them is so facinating. When we go to visit, the light in the Tuscon area is so different than ours here in Missouri. I still am a firm believer that you should only paint scenes of locations you have visited. The memory of those locations help you to paint the scenes as you remember the places you visit. With photos, you need to be aware of the lies that photos tell. If you have not visited the places you paint yourself, you will not know how to edit them and change them for your paintings.

Christopher Neal White-Fallen hero and his amazing family

This portrait of PFC Christopher Neal White was painted for his family and the new Lodge at the Chris Neal Farm. He was killed in action on June 20, 2006 at the age of 23 years old in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Our Grateful Hearts Project creates portraits of our fallen soldiers completely free of charge to the families of these heroes.

Their families are heroes too. They have given the ultimate sacrifice of their children, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers and cousins. Christopher's family have taken their grief and turned it into a wonderful tribute to their son and to all the soldiers who have gone to war and given of themselves to make our lives better.

Christopher's family started the Chris Neal Farm called Camp Hope in Farmington, Missouri where combat wounded veterans can come, at no cost to them, to have handicapped accessible experiences and activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking and skeet shooting. Their facitilities are first class handicapped accessible.

They are keeping the spirit of Chris alive in giving hope and enjoyment to disabled veterans. Please consider them this Christmas and donate to help them keep this facility going for our amazing combat wounded warriers. You can contact them at their website:www.chrisnealfarm.com.

Portrait of Boo

This beautiful boxer has crossed over the rainbow bridge. He was a much loved pet and constant companion of his owner, a little girl who was going thru cancer. Boo stuck by her side and offered her an escape from the rigors of cancer treatment. He would even let her dress him in all kinds of get-ups. He never saw this as an affront to his dignity. He was a true friend to not only the little girl, but her family as well.

It was an honor to do this portrait of him in the tiara that denoted his stature in the family. What a loving memory for them to keep of this amazing dog.

This is a 5"x7" portrait format.

Heading to the Big Cedar Lodge Paint Out in Branson, Mo.

Wednesday, I will be heading to Big Cedar Lodge for the second Paint Out Event in Branson, Missouri. It is always exciting getting ready for such an event. Besides clothing(for all types of weather), you need to pack all your painting supplies, frames, easels for display, business cards, bio, bug spray, sunscreen,, ivy block. Well, you get the picture.

It also means that once again I will trying to reduce what I take and pare down my equipment so I don't have to unload so much stuff. This for me is always a challenge! When I was only doing pastels, it was a nightmare. I am not a minimalist when it comes how many pastels I think I need. I have over 3000 in my studio but obviously can not take that many on location. So, I have three boxes each loaded with around 200-300 pastel pieces. Each box is filled with pastels for a certain location. I have one for painting in Missouri, one for out west like New Mexico and another for seascapes locations. My hubby made a travel box for my supports and papers that work well for toting surfaces ready for painting and also the finished work, in relative safety. The downside of pastels on a paint out is numerous when painting in plein aire, but the results are well worth it.

Oils, on the other hand, are wonderful on paint outs. I narrow down my oil colors to just six, plus white and the Gamblin grays. My main colors are French Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre,Cadmium Red, Burnt Sienna and Titanium white plus Art spectrum Clear. When painitng in Missouri, I will also include Olive Green and Phathlo Green plus cobalt blue and cerlean blue. I do on occasion take additional colors but these are my mainstay. By narrowing down my colors, I can create harmony throughout the painting right off the bat.

I usually take my break down table that folds all up in a little carrying case for easy packing.(You can find this marvelous table at Bass Pro Shops) I take my small easel and also my french easel, my umbrella, camping chair that folds in a bag, my backpack, a small box filled with additional paints, and my pallette box. I also include a small old rug or drop cloth for standing on while painting. I spray this with bug spray and have never had chiggers or ticks.

Antoher painting exploring shadows

Lately I have been having fun exploring shadows of all kinds. Afternoon shadows are one of my most favorite things to paint. This latest painting is no exception. This is a studio painting done from photos and an onsite oil study. I cannot begin to describe the joy of painting this scene. The scene is in Lakewood along the road where the golf course winds around and thru. Most people drive right by this spot and never notice it. I'm sure the ones who live around this little pool enjoy its beauty immensely.

The entire pond is quite tucked in by hillside and trees. In fact you must get out of your car and go to the edge of the hill just to catch the beauty as it unfolds around you. I have seen lots of wildlife(they always know the best spots) and its peaceful serene setting is what draws them, I'm sure.

This painting, as well as my other new paintings in and around Lakewood, will be the my booth #4 at the Longview Art and World Music Festival starting this Friday. Come on out and enjoy the treasures that will be displayed there by all the artists and be sure and take one home with you.

Second installment in the revision of the plein aire

Okay, the first image is the first try at revision. I decided to extend the sky all the way across the top of the painting. Also made the cove bigger and lost the slant. Started to add some additional color to the background foliage and tweak the sky holes a bit. Still did not like the fact that my focal tree is just kinda hanging out and not the star. Also, in this version, the background trees are not fading back like they need to and am still not happy with the lack of variation in the grass around the tree. Also noticed at this stage that the background hillside is pretty much one line and needs variation and also to be blued-down for it to recede into the background and show distance.

In the second photo of the painting, you will see that I addressed all those issues above. I toned down the size of the sky holes, varied the line in the background trees on the hillside and also brought the line down so the sky holes made more sense in relationship to the sky. The other thing that I did was to vary the colors in the grass and tone down the background colors a little so the tree now takes center stage. I also softened the bushes in the intermediate part of the scene so they would not compete with my tree. By changing the grasses, and toning down and mellowing the background my tree now becomes the star. And I didn't have to change a thing about the tree itself-it just needed the supporting players to get out of its light.

I also softened around the water's edge in the cove to give a little more variation where the shoreline meets the land and to soften the slope down to the water.

Hope this helps you to feel more confident when you need to re-visit a painting-It's fun exploring them with new eyes and finding ways to improve upon your original idea. Especially when you do a plein aire with a limited time crunch. They make a great learning too.

Tweaking a plein aire painting in the studio

I know that when I paint in plein aire, that sometimes things just don't work out quite like I would like. So I decided to take an old plein aire painting that I did at Lake Jacomo and revise it. The original is a two hour plein aire painting. It has hung on my wall for almost two years. There were things about the painting that just didn't appeal to me. So, when one of my students asked about the painting and what I would change-I took up the challenge. It is still not an out the door painting as far as selling is concerned but I'm happier with it and glad to get a chance to provide my students with a life lesson.

SO-here goes-
This is the original painting as it appeared that day when I was done.

I will be posting the revisions and discussing my thought process in doing those revisions in the next blog.

what I did not like about this original work is multiple. Didn't care for the top of the painting where the tree(which was my focal point) leaves the right side. Also the fact that the right side of my painting seems weighted down to that side. I also didn't like the slanted lines created by the tree line on the left, the water on the left and the way the ground also seemed to slide down the left side.

So these are my issues-as I see them. In the next blog, I will let you know how they were changed,hopefully for the better. I often change paintings that I have done that don't seem to be working. Some I can enhance and be happy with, others become a teaching and learning tool for me. I feel that you should always be in the learning mode so you can move forward in your endeavors.

New Paintings Hot off the Easel

This two paintings are my recent endeavors at the easel. The first is a painting of the putting green at Lakewood Golf and Country Club. This view was captured out the window during the recent reception for my ongoing art exhibit and sale, which will be up till the end of September. As soon as the paint dries this will be joining the other paintings hanging there.

The second painting is a view of the vines at Holyfield Winery in Bashor, Kansas. It was started as a plein aire during the recent plein aire event there. After I brought it home, I decided that it needed a little tweeking. So it went back on the easel to be revamped. I am really happy with the end result. This painting will also be going up at the Lakewood Show along with an additional plein aire painting created during the Holyfield event.

Plein Aire Painting at Holyfield Winery 2011

It was great fun painting at the Holyfield Winery this last week. This painting was done during the week and showcased during the Saturday Art Event at the Winery. Michelle is going to make this an annual event so be sure and mark your calendars for next year. The grapes were in full on display due to the high heat and good rains earlier in the year. They grow several varieties of grapes so there are loads of different colors to inspire the artists.

On the Sale Day, we were all encouraged to bring additional art that we had painted for all the wine tasters to see and enjoy and buy.

All the artists are encouraged to donate a painting completed that week to a charity. The Charity this year is Safe Haven Prison Dogs. It was an honor to paint in this beautiful winery and also help out a four-legged friend.

Some of the paintings on display at the Lakewood Oaks Golf and Country Club Exhibit and Sale

The Opening reception is August 6, tonight, from 5-6:30pm with wine and cheese. All are invited to attend The restaurant is open to all for your dining enjoyment.

Mystic Road-New Studio Painting

Every once in awhile, I try on someone else's shoes. In this case, it is the start of the new studio paining. The initial drawing was done in burnt siena and just enough to work out a few issues. Sometimes when you've been painting for awhile, it is nice to get out of your own skin and try something new. Usually, I do a full value study under my paintings but in this case, I decided to try something new which I watched a fellow artist due for a plein aire painting. It did speed up my "getting to the painting" quicker but I found that I do miss the map I get with a full value study. So, I will probably keep the full value drawing phase(even in plein aire), but maybe do a smaller study size and try this quick way under the actual painting. I'll keep you posted.

This road is like many roads in Missouri. The foliage during late spring and early summer almost masks out the sun and it is filtered through little breaks in the trees and also reflected from where the sun hits the leaves. This is a composite from one of my favorite roads in Augusta, Missouri and also one of my favorite paths in Lake Jacomo Park. This is a really great way to get the best of both paths in the studio,something I can't do when plein aire painting.

Blue Springs Garden Tour Painting

Well, I decided to continue my "larger format" experience in the "real world". I have been having fun with the larger formats in my studio and decided that I needed to try and capture that same feel and size in plein aire. I was inspired by Zak Barnes and Guido Frick who paint on large canvases outside.
It was quite a learning experience! For one thing, the larger format acts like a sail in windy conditions, which we had on Saturday. So, I bungee corded everything. Even then, I still had to, at times, hang onto the side of the canvas to keep it blowing into the lake. The other thing I had to remember was that larger canvases take MORE PAINT! After I ran out of a mixer that I loved twice, I really laid out the paint to avoid that problem. We were also painting in pretty much full sun as the umbrella refused to stay in place and after retrieving it from the water's edge, I gave up on that venture. Also painting larger requires more time-a lot more time. The smaller formats in plein aire I can usually whip out in a couple hours but this larger format takes a lot more time-thus the sunburn.(note to self reapply sunburn creme more often!!!!!!!) Other than those couple of issues, the process is basically the same.
I also decided that I need to expand my vision. So, this is the first structures done in plein aire also. It was just a huge day of "firsts". I am happy overall with the results. I may tweak it back in the studio and see if it can be fine tuned. Really though, the vision I had for the painting was pretty much completed on site. This is something I will definitely try again. I had a ball, even with the wind and sun issues.

Studio Painting-coming into its own

This is the painting as of last night. I decided to leave the grasses on the right, the rocks and the space above the rocks. I added the lily pads, refined the plant on the left and added back in some darker water on the left above the lily pads and plant. At this point, I have decided to turn the painting to the wall and let it marinate for awhile. I have enjoyed the process of "going bigger" and am moving on to another painting based on the lakes, ponds and golf course where I live.

All my bigger paintings will be going to the Lakewood Golf Club for my exhibit there in August and September-more on that later.

Also, I will be painting at 804 SW 15th, Oak Grove, Mo. this Saturday from 9am to 4pm during the Blue Springs Garden Tour. The garden I am painting in has 11 gardens and a small lake. As I love water, this just seemed the perfect spot for me. Chrissy, my daughter-in-law and student, will be joining me on this adventure. After the morning rain, it should be a fun day. So come on out and say hi!

New Phase for the Studio Painting

This is the second phase of my plein aire to studio painting. I have finished with the water, refined my rocks, added some grasses and am ready to move to the next phase. It has been an interesting process. Lots more time to think than the plein aire experience. That has proved to be a good and bad thing. I think the key, for me anyway, is not to overthink but to try and capture that spontaneous feeling and excitement that I get when plein aire painting but also to have it be more refined in my decisons. It is time now to put away the reference material and let the painting come into its own.

A New Direction-From Plein aire to Studio-Going Bigger

I am starting a new painting which is a little (okay a lot) different for me. I am using a plein aire painting and reference photos to create a larger studio painting. I will be posting my progress into this new journey of unknown. I have long wanted to go "BIGGER" but always been a little reluctant. Not sure entirely why but probably just time, money and FEAR! I have finally decided that this will afford me an opportunity to expand my market and hopefully expand my collectors in the process. Plus-let's face it-it's just FUN!

I also want to encourage my students to expand their horizons and lunge forward into the unknown. I have discovered that a few things are evident-like more expensive canvases, more paint(definitely using my limited palette range), more time(but this is actually a plus by not feeling "rushed" to finish like when I do plein aire), and I can paint at 3am if I chose in relative comfort-even in my pj's if I chose.(not really an option in plein aire).

So, here goes-

The Stems Paintings from the Overland Park Arboretum

These paintings were created on site at the Overland Park Arboretum during the Stems Plein Aire Event. This is an annual event and fundraiser for The Arts and Recreation Foundation of Overland Park. This event is in its third year.

I have participated in the first years event which was an invitational event by the MidAmerica Pastel Society. The second year, I was out in Taos, New Mexico painting in plein aire there and didn't get back in time to due that year even though I had signed up. This year, we got back from the Augusta, Mo. Plein Aire event in time to hit both the George Owens Nature Park plein aire and the Stems plein aire events.

One of my paintings in the George Owens Nature Park event received an honorable mention in the judging at that event.

The painting of the water lillies and rock wall named "Tranquility" and the painting of the water, rock and willow called "Willow, Rock, Water" sold during the VIP events at the Rice Gallery in Leawood, Ks.

The first day we went out was nice and very pleasant. The second and third it rained but we were used to that from the Augusta Mo paint out where it rained almost every day this year. It is nice to be painting in oils instead of pastels cause oils don't mind the water. Pastels, on the other hand, are not fond of water.

There were wonderful paintings created by all the artists during the Stems event and you can still purchase some of the paintings that will be at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center or at the Stems A Garden Soiree Event in the Stems Plein Air Paint sales tent.

So get out and support the arts!

Plein Air in Augusta, Mo.-Fun in the outdoors

These are the paintings that I painted in Augusta, Missouri at the Plein aire event last week. It was wonderful to paint there again and revisit some of the places I painted before and discover new ones. These are only the ones that I think should see the light of day, the rest shall remain a mystery(probably even to me).

The first painting is of a cliff in Klondike Park. This park is not included in the paint out but it is a beautiful park in an old quarry along the river and the Katy Trail. It has so many places that cry out to be painted. There is a lake and beautiful white sandy beaches. Of course the bluffs are amazing also and if you are willing to hike, a expansive view of the Missouri river.

The second painting is a different view of the entrance to Blumenhof Winery in Dutzow. I had several people stop and ask what attracted me to this painting. In truth, it was the light on the concrete culvert. It is always strange to me how we humans seek to channel nature and how nature always wins out in the end.

The third painting is of a church in Augusta, Mo. The red dogwoods against the white building were enchanting and the stained glass windows mimicked the colors in the trees. I painted there with about four other artists and it is wonderful to see our different versions of the scene.

The fourth painting is of the old farm across from Balducci winery. This painting was done done during the sunset paint sponsored by the winery. I paint this view every year and it is amazing how it changes but remains the same. The light in the sky was so subtle. This view does not get the brilliant reds and oranges of the main sunset but more the "left overs" of the sunset.

The fifth painting was painted at Blumenhof also. This is the view of the creek which runs along side of the entrance to the winery. The foliage was such a brilliant green along the creek and the sun lit it up like it was on fire. I tried to capture the feeling that I had while standing there and looking at such brilliant beauty.

New Student paintings-today's work by the students is awesome

The top two paintings were done by Joyce and the lower painting by Chrissy. They both did great today! Joyce was working on two paintings for an upcoming exhibit at Advanced Surgical in Lee's Summit, Mo. Joyce has decided that she does better under pressure, at least as far as completing paintings in a timely manner is concerned. I must agree. She has finished three this week alone-GO JOYCE!

Chrissy has been working on getting faster from concept to finished painting. She will need these skills to make her a faster plein aire painter. Today, she took a painting from idea, to concept, to drawing to completion in around two-three hours. Well, done Chrissy! I think she is ready for our Augusta Missouri plein aire trip coming up at the end of April.

These two students have been with me the longest and are really coming into their own as artists. I am so proud of both of them. Great work today gals.

If Life Gives You Lemons----

Well, here in Missouri the weather can take unexpected turns. Yesterday, it snowed after a lovely spring day the day before. I had planned on painting in plein aire and when I woke up to big fat flakes of snow coming down everywhere, I was disappointed. However, remembering my Grandma's words "If life gives you lemons-make lemonade". I donned my coat and braved the cold. This is another painting from the series "Paintings from the Porch". Painting on a grey day

My students have been complaining about all the grey weather we've been having lately and the fact that winter is dragging on forever. The 50 degree days we get every once in a while is not helping. We even had a wonderful 70 degree day right before it snowed and iced like crazy. With this welcome back to winter, I decided to paint some oils from my porch. These were created looking into the backyard and across the cove. I had a great time painting these and just wanted to share what you can do on a wintery grey day. You need to watch your values, as they will be limited in this kind of atmosphere, but they still provide a nice range of color to work with and capture the mood of the day. These paintings will be up for sale on my website soon. If you are interested please contact me as I have a special "without frame" price and they are hot off the easel.

Big Cedar Lodge Paint Out

These images are pastels that I did in plein aire at the Big Cedar Lodge Paint Out. It was a great event and the landscape was absolutely wonderful. This was the first year for the Paint Out and the staff at Big Cedar Lodge were up for the challenge.

Big Cedar Lodge is just a little south of Branson, Missouri in the Ozarks. Once you enter the Ozarks, you are surrounded with great painting opportunities everywhere you look. Fall is an especially great time for a painting trip to the Ozarks. The fall color this year was not as vibrant as past years but still stunning.

Big Cedar Lodge offers a variety of activities for all ages. Some of the buildings that have been restored make fantastic painting venues. There are many small ponds that reflect the bounty of fall and beckon you to paint them. There are stone bridges and waterfalls in abundance, not to mention the lake itself.

We stayed in the fishing cabins which face the lake and were a short walk to the water. The cabins were fully equipped with a kitchen so we could save on food. However, the restaurants are definitely worth a trip. We ate a Greek salad at the Truman House which was really nice and well worth it.

I'll post more of the paintings that I painted there later.

New student paintings-Have a look they're GREAT!

The first painting is Chrissy's. She worked from a photograph she had taken back east on the coast. The photo itself had some issues as all photos do. However, we've been working on making good decisions and really planning their paintings. Photos lie and you have to be aware of that when working from them. It helps if you are working from photos you have taken and places you have actually been. Your memory kicks in and helps you fill in the blanks that the photo doesn't capture. I had her start by doing several thumbnails to narrow down her plan and composition. Then I had her visualize her color pallette and actually work up a chart using those colors. then, with her plan in place, she was able to do this painting and she did a great job!

Joyce, on the other hand, is working on the same lesson about working from a photo but hers is still a work in progress. However, the abstract that is here is one we worked on from a landsacpe painting that failed. We looked at it from different angles to see if it could be saved. Well, by turning it sideways and looking at the beautiful melding of colors that she had going on, she was able to turn a failed landscape into a wonderful abstract painting. Loved the little gold touches which just make this painting pop!

Way to go girls-you really rocked it this week in class! I am so proud of you and couldn't wait to share your successes.

Painting portraits from photographs

It is always a challenge painting portraits from photographs, but sometimes, as in the case of my latest commission, it was the only way. The client wanted a sketch done from the only photo of her ancestors that she possessed. The heads in the photos were smaller than 1 1/2" which is usually as small as I like to go to get a likeness. Even for the Grateful Hearts Program, we like to have the heads in the photos be at least 1 1/2" to 2" tall at minimum.

Sometimes ,even though, the photo is not all that you may want as an artist, you can still achieve a good likeness and create a memory for your client. Hopefully, this is what I have succeeded at with this painting. The client has seen the piece in various stage of development along the way and is pleased with the direction the painting is taking.

I can not express more importantly that when you do commission work, it is vital that you involve your client. Afterall, it is their memory and vision you are ultimately relying on to create your work. Some artists have told me that they do not like commission work-feels it stifles their creativity and their voice. I on the other hand enjoy the collaborative effort to involve someone in the production of art. It is also satisfying to know that you have created something that your client will treasure and a memory that will be seen and shared with others.

So go ahead and try commissions, let loose your creative spirit and help it to live on thru others.

New oil painting-work in progress

Every once in awhile, I like to try something new. This is a new subject for me-the Arizona landscape in winter. I decided to do an oil painting from a photo that I had taken in Arizona a few years ago. The starkness of the landscape and the wonderful cloud formations are going to be a challenge.

You never know, when you start a painting if it will be a success or not. Even the failures can provide valuable learning experiences and so should be pursued. The jury is still out on this work. I feel that I have achieved the starkness of the landscape that I felt when viewing it in person.

I also think that the clouds are coming along nicely. However, other parts are still haunting me so I will put this one aside for awhile and look at it again in about a week. Sometimes, you need a fresh eye to see what is working and what's not. Don't be afraid to critique your work-not everything you do will be spot on. I think most of we artists forget that from time to time.

You will never know how far you've come as an artist if you don't remember where you've been. Now go out a paint the world!

My newest paintings from the Joan Parker monthly workshop

These are the most recent paintings done in the workshop held at my Blue Springs, Missouri studio and conducted by Joan Parker,a wonderful Kansas artist. This weeks paintings were done in the Manet style(he did flower paintings in his studio due to his age and failing eyesight). The first painting is of a green pitcher filled with sunflowers and the second is a study in how to paint glass.

The class is held the last Friday of each month at the studio located at 501 NW 5th Street, Suite 500, Blue Springs, Mo. 64014. If you are interested in attending, please contact me and I'll be happy to sign you up.

Next months class we'll be doing studies of boots, wine bottles and sea shells. Each has it's own characteristic which will present a challenge. All paintings are done from life. The workshop is from 9am to 4pm.

Tired of the heat! Here's a snow painting for you.

This painting is mostly pastel but again with an oil underwash. We were on our way to the Grand Cayon(south rim) and traveled thru this valley brimming with new fallen snow. We stopped to take photos and do color studies(they are hard to do with frozen hands). The shadows from the trees were incredible with light bouncing off the snow like a cat and mouse game being played between the sun and the trees.

Painting this really refreshed my outlook on life that day and renewed my senses with memories that came flooding back. We had a grand day all around!

River Mirror, The demo is completed

This is the completed painting from the oil underpainting demo that I shared the other day. I really enjoyed completing this one. It brought back lots of memories of our trip out west and the wonderfully colorful scenery that was all around us. The painting is done from photos and color studies that I made there on location. I have found that when traveling, I don't always have time to pull over and complete a painting but I always seem to squeeze enough time in for color studies and photos.

If you take the photos yourself and do color studies to remind you of the day and place, you can use them back in the studio to refresh your memory and paint with confidence.

Try it next time you are traveling and don't have time to pull over and paint.

Lessons-Pastel with underpainting in Oil

I have been asked by students and some fellow artists to show my process of underpainting with oils for pastels. So here is the start-

The first image is the underpainting itself. I thin the oils down with Gamsol and fill in where I want to with the colors I've chosen. In this case I wanted to pump up the blues and oranges which will be in the final painting.

Image 2 is done after the oil underpainting has dried. This only takes a few minutes especially when painting in plein air. I am starting to lay in my darks.

Image 3 is adding the colors that I will work with to the end of the painting. I have decided to leave the sky pretty much as the underpainting with just a few touches of pastel to enhance what is already there.

Image 4 is pretty much the final but I still may go back and add more color to the trees or perhaps define them more. At this stage, I usually let the painting sit with it's back to me for a couple of days and then take a look to see if there is something I want to add or change.

I'll post the final when it gets to that stage.

Revamping paintings to success

Sometimes,for whatever reason, a painting just doen't work when plein aire painting. I have decided to revamp a few of these paintings. Now that I have new skills in oils, I want to push these little studies to new heights.

Every artist goes thru these spells and learning curves. Instead of just giving it up to the trash pile, see if you can raise it from the dead zone instead. It might not work on all your junk pile but remember one person's trash is another's treasure. If the composition works and the main focus or center of interest is working, why not give it a shot!

So, look at your junk and go change it into treasure!

Painting the "New" Masters

The blog this week is on copying the Masters. This process was done religiously among the Impressionists and even artists that came before them. They flocked to the museums, private collections and the many schools that taught traditional art techniques. What they learned was invaluable.

My students are exploring this old technique for learning, but we are copying the "new" masters. Those artists that they greatly admire and whose work is very recognized in today's world. They can also chose to copy the older artist like Cassatt, Van Gogh, Monet, etc. It's their choice and then after they copy a work, they need to chose one of their own photos to work from in that artist's style.

This affords them a way to test out different styles and techniques that can learn to incorporate in their own work or decide it's not for them.

The painting above is Chrissy's take on Albert Handell's style. Mr. Handell is a wonderful painter whose use of light, value and shapes are not only unique but wonderfully easy on the eye. I have had the honor of working side by side with him at several mentoring workshops and feel that this has enhanced my own art in many ways.

Any chance you get to paint alongside a master should be jumped on as you will learn so much from the experience. If you can not do this because of time, distance or finances then get books or go to museums where you can study their work up close and personal.

I believe that every artist needs to keep constantly learning and developing. You should never let yourself become stagnant or complacent, but try new styles, learn from new teachers and stretch your visions. Once a month, I have been offering a class at my studio in Blue Springs taught by a wonderful artist named Joan Parker. She is an exceptional artist and teacher. She paints in plein aire and also in her studio. All of us have enjoyed learning new skills and concepts from her. These are the two paintings I completed today in class. One is a value study and the other a finished piece. Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed painting them.

Plein Aire in a Blue Springs Garden

These two paintings are studies done in a Blue Springs Garden during the BS Historical Garden Tour. The first is the cloud study I did while watching the impending storm descend upon us. The second painting is a vignette of a little corner of the garden.

These are just two of the paintings done in the garden. The weather was around 90 degrees but there was a great breeze which helped keep me cool. I painted under a nice shade tree on the property. When the storm finally broke in full force, I had packed up most of my equipment the car. Just when the rain came down in buckets, I carried my french easel back to the car where I broke down the legs under the cover of the hatch. My equipment stayed dry but I was soaked on my back and head. Suddenly, the temperature dropped to 68 degrees. Needless to say, I got cooled off quickly. Oh, the joys of painting in plein aire.

Taking a chance

Sometimes we artists get in ruts. We want to stay in our comfort zones and not venture out into uncharted waters. Well, this week at a workshop, I decided to branch out and take a chance. I am reacquainting myself with oils after a long hiatus. I have done portraits and figurative work in pastels for years now and that is my comfort zone. On the encouragement of my instructor, I tried this painting from a photo he had in his stack.

My fears proved to be unfounded. What I learned is that if you have good basics in other mediums, you can try new mediums with a modicum of success. So I encourage all of you to try a medium that is new to you and see how far you can take it. Good luck and have fun!

First Oil of my favorite pond

I often paint this pond at Blue Springs Lake area. The pond lies in a quiet area just up from the bigger lake. I intend to paint this pond is all seasons, to see how it changes thru the seasons.

Oil paintings is the same as pastels, in that, you apply the color the same-from dark to light. Unlike pastel, the more paint you get on the canvas, the easier it is to lay in additional layers.

New photo of Around the Bend

The first photo is the new photo that I took yesterday under the correct lighting. When taking photos of my work I try to either take them outside on a cloudy or overcast day with direct lighting or in my dark room in my studio. The studio situation works much better since I can control the lighting. I use two Ott lights set up at 45 degree angles to the painting so that the light is even across the surface. I also put the painting in my black box set up to take out all distracting colors from the room. The camera is set up with the lens in the middle of the painting and I make sure the tripod(which the camera is on) is level. I also have a setting on my camera that will take successive photos of either 3 or 7 while changing the apperture and fstops. This gives you a better chance of getting the colors to be real.

Hope this helps, you can definetly see the difference. The second picture, with all the golds, was taken under regular incandescent lighting in the studio.

There are of course other options for taking photos of paintings, this is just mine.

Lazy Day Lion

Years ago, I took a photo of this lion at the KC Zoo. This was right before they started remodeling and updating the zoo. This guy looked so bored. All he had was a small patch of earth to roam on and the rest was concrete and rock. They have improved the exhibits and also the places where the animals are kept and live. I'm sure this guy is thankful!

New oil painting from Augusta

This painting was done from a photo that I had taken in Augusta, Mo. just down from our cabin. I laid in a monochromatic value sketch and then painted over that in an alla prima style. I put a time constraint on the painting process just like I would have when painting this scene outside on location.

This is good practice for those rainy days when painting outside is more of a challenge than you want to endure. I also worked on a new surface that I had not tried before. Jury is still out on the surface!

The photo is a little different in color than the actual painting. I took the photo just using the track lighting from the studio and not my usual photo set up. But, I'll take another photo later under better conditions later.

Fun day at the studio-finished a cat portrait commission(first one in oil since I started painting in oil again). Did this little painting and drew out my next project on the canvas. Rainy days can be productive afterall!

Collaboration on a painting

While in Augusta, Mo. at the cabin this year, we all decided to collaborate on a painting for the owners of the 1870's cabin we stay at every year. I had never tried acrylics and neither had Chrissy. With Erlene's encouragement and guidance, we all worked on the painting while sitting on the cabin porch. The sun, which had been elusive, was shinning brightly and the weather was beautiful. Chrissy painted in the sky, I did the trees and foreground and Erlene did the cabin. Then I framed it and we all signed it.

Bob and Judy loved it and were very touched that we had done this for them and the cabin. We all had input into it's design and how we should approach our subject. We tried to keep in style with other decor of the cabin. Judy and Bob have done a wonderful job of decorating the cabin and making it look like someone has owned it and been there for years. It is a wonderful mix of the old and new.

If anyone is looking for a quiet place to chill out and relax, the cabin is the place. They offer it for romantic getaways, friends or family reunions, and much more. The cabin can accomodate up to four people, three comfortably. I think it would be a great place for sisters to go and re-connect. (hint to all my sisters-sorry brother.)

Painting in Augusta

Well, it's that time of year again, spring! I am in the process of packing up my art stuff for the annual painting trip to the plein aire 10 day event in Augusta, Missouri. There are about 100 artists signed up this year to participate. If you get a chance to venture that way during the 10 days, starting on April 21st, you should definitely try. It is amazing to be in the company of so many artists painting throughout the countryside. There are also planned painting events during the event and sales of the paintings completed during the event on May 1st. and the Mount Pleasant Winery from noon to 6pm. in Augusta, Mo.

On Top of the World-new painting

This painting was done from photos taken when we were up in Leadville, Colorado. The clouds were hanging low, in fact, at times it was hard to tell what where the clouds stopped and the mountains began. It was way to cold to paint,even for this die hard plein aire painter. This was the trip that my brave husband kept pulling off the side of the road(sometimes in grave peril and under protest) to let me take my photo references.

Rainy and Cloudy days are great painting days

My blog today is about cloud painting. This painting was done while sitting on my porch in Taos, New Mexico on a very cold and rainey day. I hauled my painting stuff out, put on a jacket, and painting for about four hours under the canopy of my porch. It was wonderful sitting there painting clouds while the rain came gently down. Plein aire experiences can work in any weather-you just need to be open to the moment. Happy Painting!

What do awards really mean?

Today's blog came about because I listended to two of my students bemoan the fact that they haven't received awards at the shows they have entered. It seems to be a re-current theme among aritst that enter shows. I have heard several of my artist friends who are devastated by the fact that they don't win awards.

What is it about awards that make our lives so centered around whether we "win" or "lose". When did it happen that it became more about the award and less about the art? Don't get me wrong awards are great. They are a validatioin that for that piece, on that day, someone thought your art was a stand out from the rest.

What I think we forget sometimes is that awards are someone's opinion about our work and the work of others in that particular show. What I think should be more important is how you view your work. Is it the best you could have produced? Does the composition and values work well for the concept? Are you proud of this piece? Is the drawing accurate? Does the art "say" what you wanted to say when you produced this piece? Does this piece move you and therefore your audience?

Art in the long run is a personal journey of each artist. Enjoy the journey and the process and your art will always be an "award" winner.

Two paintings that will be in the Blue Springs Art League Show

Coming up March 21 and 22nd is the Blue Springs Art League Show at Vesper Hall in Blue Springs, Mo. The painting "Toward the Light" featured here will be in this show along with a painting called "Waiting". Hope all of you come out and see all the great art that will be on exhibition and for sale.

Michael Davis, one of the woodworkers in the Gragg Art Gallery, will also have two pieces featured at this show.

The opening reception is Saturday from 7-9pm.Tickets to the reception can be purchased at the door the night of the reception $8.00 each or $15.00 per couple.

The Exhibition is open free to the public.

Miko, a tribute to a special little lady

Last week, we lost our beloved Miko. She had cancer which finally took her life. She was the love of my husband's Michael's life. She was a 14 year old shih tzu with personality plus. He commissioned me to do her portrait for him to hang in his den. This is the portrait done with love. Hope you enjoy her and her spirit which I think I have captured in her portrait.

New Angel for the Grateful Hearts Project

The other day, we were informed that we would no longer be receiving our packaging for our grateful hearts project with a discount. This was heartbreaking. Then--I went to my MAPS(Midamerica Pastel Society) meeting and told them about it.

The next morning, I heard from a fellow pastel artist and her husband. Her husband and his partner own the UPS Store at 18921 Valley View Pkwy in Independence, Mo. and they told me that they would pick up all the costs for packaging and shipping for the Grateful Hearts Project that we need to ship.

It is amazing to me that our little grass roots project affects so many lives. It affects not only the families we do the portraits for but the many volunteers that give time and materials to provide the portraits for the families. I am so grateful to be associated with the artists and friends that constantly step up.

Final steps in gridding

Continue completing your boxes(as many as you need). To complete the box just repeat the steps, going from corner to corner and from top to bottom thru the X and from side to side thru the X. Remember that the lines you create on your drawing surface need to be repeated on your photo so when you go to transfer the drawing, your lines will be the same grid on both. You can continue gridding down as small as you need to transfer the details. When doing portraits, this is handy when you need to get eye, mouth and nose detail location.

Now, you will draw a line from top to bottom on both your photo and your drawing surface going through where the lines of your X intersect. Then draw a line from side to side,horizontally, on both your photo and your drawing surface where your X intersect. I have included photos of my marks to show how this will look.

Move your photo to the right side and repeat the process on this side. You should now have an X on your drawing paper.

Now, you want to place the your trimmed photo at the left hand corner of your drawing surface(this is where you decide if you want a verical or horizontal format).
Place the yard stick/ruler at the corner of your photo lining it up thru the opposite corner of your photo. Now you are ready to make that first line. You will draw from one corner up thru the opposite corner and upwards across your drawing surface. (I am using black marker on the photo so it will show up better but you will need to use your 2B pencil).
Move your photo to the side and complete the line down to the corner of your drawing surface as in the above photos.

Creating a grid for transfer or enlarging your photos

We are going to take a step by step journey on creating a grid for transfering and enlarging your favorite photos to your drawing surface. In this first step, I will tell you what you will need to get started.

The first thing you will need is your drawing surface, a 36" ruler or yard stick, a 2B graphite pencil, and or course your photo. You will need to make a copy of your photo as you will be marking directly on the photo copy.

The first step is to trim your photo to the exact image you wish to grid.

Next, you will need to decide if you image will be horizontal or vertical.

Decide on the size of your drawing surface(I will be using an 18"x24" size for this demo).

So, go get your stuff and let's get started---

Valentine's Day and the New sign up at the Studio/Gallery

Art Classes at the Gallery

Hey, it's time to release your inner child! We have art classes on Wednesday, from 2-4pm: Friday, from 10am to Noon : and starting January 30th, Saturday, from 10am to Noon.

Call, email or stop by to sign up. We will be focusing on drawing in the Wednesday class, the Friday class is focusing on pastels and the Saturday class will start off with drawing and then try a couple different mediums just to give them a whirl.

If any artist is interested in teaching classes at the gallery just give me a call and we'll chat about it.

Buddy loses some of his privleges

Well, Buddy is evolving into a regular little happy dog and leaving his puppy mill status behind. Buddy is getting too attached to me and therefore getting a little protective. We consulted our vet and she made the suggestion that Buddy's bed privleges are suspended for now. He has been growling at Michael when he pets him while Buddy is on the bed-so for now-he will have to stay off the bed and in his own little bed. After two months, we will try to let him back on the bed with us. However, if he growls or snaps at Michael after that he will again be denied this special privlege. We are also going to have Michael start feeding him at least every other day so he knows that Michael is also a giver of all things good.

Buddy is also a little grumpy in the mornings so since Michael always walks him first thing in the morning, Michael will start giving him a treat to wake him up, a treat when he lets him put his halter on, and a treat when he comes back from his walk and lets Mike take off his leash and little red coat and does not growl.

It is always a learning experience for our little guy. His five years of puppy mill and lack of socialization leaves him with no regular benchmarks of behavior that regular dogs get from birth, but he is doing amazing and with patience he will be great.

At the vets suggestion, we are going to take the top off his crate so when he retreats to his crate and we need to get him out to walk, eat, etc., we will not be pulling him out like they must have done in his previous circumstance. With the top off, he will still have his own space, but we will be picking him up from above instead of pulling him out the door. He still needs to feel that he has a space to retreat to when he feels unsure but he also needs to start knowing that human contact is not a bad thing.

I hope that by continuing to blog about Buddy, we will encourage others to give these great dogs a chance at a normal life.

Organizing the New Art Studio

We worked late into the night last night getting the railing up for the walker system to hang the paintings. It looks really good and works even better. Today, I am going there to organize, clean, hang paintings and just get going. I'm so excited about having a place to set up all my painting supplies and leave them out and room to just create! I'll post photos as soon as I get them uploaded.

New Studio move in date-tomorrow!

Finally, the day has come. I got the key to my new studio and went to start cleaning. I swept the floors, mopped the main floor and bathroom-ugh! Okay this part is not the fun part!!!! All the utilities get turned on tomorrow-so a final cleaning and vacuuming will be on the agenda for tomorrow. Then-moving in!!!!!

Mike has been painting the picture hanging rail and I am ordering the walker wall system stuff today. I can't wait to get in and set up and then start PAINTING!!! I am really getting backed up on portraits. Oh well, soon it will be all smooth sailing.

Adobe at Rio Hondo

Adobe at Rio Hondo, along with Shadows on the Pond, was juried into the Holiday Show at Got Art Gallery in Lee's Summit, Mo. on 3rd Street. These two pieces will be on display thru December 21st. The artist reception is scheduled for December 4th from 6-9pm. (wine and refreshments provided by Gallery)

This piece was created on site in Taos, New Mexico during a plein aire trip in April, 2009. This building and others at this location are over 100 years old. They are on a ranch that remains in the original family. Though the ranch is no longer a working one, the family has retained the buildings instead of tearing them down to preserve their history. Artists still flock to the ranch to paint the many structures still standing on the property. It was great to paint a piece of New Mexico's history. The original owners had come from Mexico in the days before New Mexico was a state, to establish a new life in the new country.

Hope you will stop by and enjoy all the wonderful art that is on display. Great place to get a unique Christmas gift.

New Studio space

I am so excited. I have a new venture and a new studio space. Starting December 1st, I will be moving into new space at 501 NW 5th St., Suite 500, Blue Springs, Mo. 64014. In addition to my studio space, I will be opening up a new small gallery and teaching space. It is going to be wonderful to have more room to spread out and wall space to store my finished work.

As soon as I get organized, I will be having an open house and setting up class schedules. So keep tuned into the blog for updates.

Also, the painting upbove called "Shadows on the Pond" has been juried into the 2009 Holiday Group Art Show at Got Art Gallery, on 3rd St. from November 20 to Dec. 21st. Opening reception Friday, December 4th from 6-9PM.

New Update on Buddy, the puppy mill rescue

This is Buddy sharing our Princess Miko's pink bed. Obviously Buddy has no issues with his manhood.(even after being neutered) They have become fast friends and she has helped him greatly in learning how to be a pet. We have discovered that when we want Buddy to learn something showing him how Miko does it seems to really help. He is doing great with his house training-only one accident in months. He runs in circles and then to the door when he needs to go outside.

He still has some eccentric behaviours but they are really cute. He still runs around bringing me items that he finds interesting-like shoes, clothing, paper, etc. He doesn't chew anything just brings them to us. He also plays hide and seek with me. I will hide around the corner then come look for me when I call his name. He even came into the kitchen and sat under the table the other day, instead of hiding in his crate ,when some family came over for lunch. He is now taking treats out of my husband's hand. We still have not found a way to teach him other commands like sit, down, etc. But we are still trying different things to enhance his learning experience in a positive way. One of the things we are trying is to say the command when he actually does it on his own. (this might take a long time but I have patience).

He walks well on a leash now. He and I take walks in the park and he is no longer afraid of the geese and ducks-people, however, are still an issue. I am still using two leashes-one on his halter and one on his collar-when we walk out of our comfort zone(the yard). When he gets freaked, he still trys to run and he is quite the houdini when stressed!

CAC 20th Annual showcase event

Last night I took one of my paintings "Gorge on the High Road" to the juried 20th annual art showcase sponsored by the CAC of Eastern Jackson County. I was also recognized by the Independence Art Association as their volunteer of the year. I received a lovely plaque engraved with the honor and my name. Pat Betteridge, an officer of the IAA and my friend, introduced me and gave me the plaque. Several other honorees were recognized from various other organizations. There was food, wine, dancing, an art showing, a a really good time was had by all.

Thanks to the Independence Art Association for voting me their volunteer of the year. They are a great organization and one of the best art associations around. They offer companionship, demonstrations, programs, gallery space opportunities, and most important of all friendship with fellow artists.

Program at the MAPS meeting on Oct. 27

I will be giving a demonstration at the Midamerica Pastel Society on Oct. 27, 2009 after the MAPS meeting which starts at 7PM at the The Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 MIssion Road, Prairie Village, Ks. 66208.

I will be talking about the Grateful Hearts Project Portraits and projecting a personality and realism when working from photographs. How to discern the reality from a flat image, how to use props and models to help with how cloth falls, how light hits, how to pick out the planes of the face. I will also be talking about how to start from a sketch to work out all the main shapes of the image before going on to finding details.

Come out and see how to work from limited photography images and make the most of their potential.

Well, its finally up and running. The Grateful Hearts Project has its own website. I have received four new requests and will be giving them out to the artists for completion of the portraits for the families soon. This project has been a wonderful way to honor the sacrifices made-not only by our soldiers-but also their families. I know that I speak for all the artists involved when I say how honored and humbled we are to be able to paint the portraits for the families.

Buddy and the Vet

Buddy and I went to the vet yesterday. I needed to get some more pain meds for
Miko and their heartworm meds. We also had them do a blood test on Buddy before we try the behavior medication. His constant anxiety and stress when I'm not with him is overwhelming him. I will keep you posted on our progress. He is making great strides. We have been walking in the park by our house to get socialized. He is now able to get around the geese without going into a panic. He even let a couple with a boxer stop and talk and pet him, without him shaking. Progress is slow but steady!

We'll keep you posted on our progress with the behavior modification.

Longview Art and World Music Festival

Had a great time at the art fair this last weekend. Sold two original paintings and made lots of new friends and art collectors. Friday the wind was way too strong to set up but we were able to set up Saturday morning and enjoyed wonderful weather both Saturday and Sunday. To all who came out and stopped by my tent-Thanks! Buddy update!

Buddy is doing good. He had a little setback when we changed locations. We moved in with my Mom to help after her fall and he is finding it difficult to adjust to the new digs. He has discovered a new game(which we are currently trying to help him find another choice). I walked into our bedroom to find toliet paper strewn all over with a trail leading back to the bathroom. He had taking the piece hanging down that he could reach and started creating his own form of teepeeing. Needless to say-we were not amused!

His potty training is still on track-at least with the wet part. The more solid part is still an issue now and then. When he gets stressd, he leaves a little present for us-even if he has just been outside to do "his business". We are working on this!

I am trying to leave him with "puppy sitters" because he is getting way to focused on me and freaks whenever he can't see me or find me. My son watched him one day last week and said that he first started whimpering when he figured out I had gone then raised his head and started howling. Anyone with suggestions on how to help him with his seperation anxiety would be greatly appreciated.

New Painting completed during the CF Foundation fundraiser

This painting was started in plein aire at Taos, New Mexico and completed live during the CF Fundraiser at Union Station last Thursday.

This part of the Rio Grande river runs through Rio Hondo. About a mile from this site the rapids become very intense. While I was painting, I could hear the screams of the rafters as they ran the rapids downstream from me. I personally prefer my rabids in my paintings than in a raft, but to each their own.

CF Fundraiser tonight!

Tonight at Union Station, I and fellow artists will be painting during the Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser. We will set up our plein aire equipment and paint while the event unfolds around us. Buddy and the Groomer

Buddy has his first "official" grooming appointment today. I dropped him off and he wasn't shaking so we took that as a good sign.
He is still very fearful of strange noices. Anyone who sneezes, squeaky toys, pots and pans on the stove, the alarm clock in the morning-well-you get the picture. We are trying to socialize him to everyday sounds and get him to understand that they are not threatening just loud. I used to let him come to me and I'd hold him and pet him to calm him down but a trainer friend of mine said that really re-enforces his fears so we are trying to come up with a different approach. We can't use food because he is still not interested in doggy treats-not even warmed hot dogs or chicken. Anyone out there that follows the blog and has a good non-food way of coping with this and helping Buddy would be appreciated.

Buddy's Love/Hate Relationship with the Vet

Buddy is becoming quite the little social butterfly-however-he does have some limitations when collecting his "friends". His foot got something imbedded in it and rose up like a giant balloon. Of course, this meant a trip to the vet. He already had a follow-up appointment to recheck his ears. (He had polyps/papillomas, calcification and infections from years of neglect at the puppy mill.) So, we had the vet look at his foot also. She had to lance the interdigital ruptured abscess, clip and scrub his foot and flush the wound. When he first got home from the vet, he was not happy and let everyone know it with a low growl. I was not home at the time since I had an emergency with my Mom and my husband had taken him to the vet. My son told me about the "leave me alone behavior" when I got home. I however, didn't experience any of this as when I got there Buddy wagged his tail, gave me kisses(something new in his behavior) and acted like I was Queen.(which of course in his world, I am)

He is now running around all happy and obviously in much less pain. I think he did really good for having all this stuff done to him. After dinner, a walk outside to do his business and a drink of water, he settled in beside me on my bed and promptly went to sleep. He loves to sleep on the bed on my side but can't quite jump up so when I'm not available, he goes into my son's room and whines. Then when he follows, Buddy runs around to my side of the bed and puts his paws on the bed-like"okay, help me up". This is Buddy's new favorite routine. I think he's been watching our spoiled little "Princess Miko" too much. Miko our 14 year old Shih tsu won't even go up stairs without being carried by my husband(her personal servant). I have informed Buddy-IT AIN"T HAPPENING-there can only be one diva in the pack and that position has already been taken.

Buddy's Variation of playing

Well, last night we discovered a whole new side of Buddy. He has been watching Scooter and Miko playing and interacting with we humans. He seems to absorb the dog skills from them like a sponge.
Last night, as I was sitting reading in bed, he came dragging one of my boots that he had gotten out of my closet over to the rug beside my side of the bed. He dropped it on the rug and wagged his tail so hard, he lost his balance. I told him "thank you" and put it up on the bed for returning to the closet later. He disappeared again and returned with one of my slippers. Again he dropped it, wagged his tail and I put the new item on the bed. This went on for about four different shoes, all mine, as he re-invented the "fetch" game.
I finally went to put back the shoes and discovered that he had quite a stash in the corner of the closet. There I found the ink pens, phone cover, and various other items that had disappeared from our night stands. None had been chewed on just left there for safe keeping by our little Buddy. We're going to work on teaching him how to play the fetch AND RETURN game, though in his mind this game is working well as it is.

Hobbies for Heroes

I am starting a new series of paintings entitled "Faces of War". This series will contain both originals and prints. These paintings are being done to help fund the Hobbies for Heroes program which is the brainchild of my wounded warrior son, Michael.

These paintings will be done from photos he took in Iraq before his vehicle was blown up by an IED. His brain injury has been helped by his involvement in art and hobbies. There is documented evidence of the difference it has made in his brain injury and therefore his life.

The testing has found that his visual spatial has improved 25%. This means that there are significant improvements in executive abilities. This is his ability to judge what is happening in the environment and make decisions. It is an important skill to prevent accidents and react to things in the environment. Safety issues are a big area of concern, such as responding to an emergency in the home such as fire, and preventing accidents.(i.e. leaving the stove on, etc.) Visual spatial also tells us about our position in space, as when we are walking to avoid something that might be in the way causing the person to trip and fall because of poor visual spatial abilities. Visual spatial abilities are integral to interpreting and responding to everything in our environment for all of our activities all day, every day. It will also give them a new since of self confidence and accomplishment. This program will target the needs of these once active soldiers who are now forced to stay at home with out the purpose they once had and try to give them a new one they can do at home. Through practice, they will even be able to tap their competitive nature at art and craft shows. The occupational therapist, speech therapist and the psychiatrist at the VA are really excited about this new program.

Honoring the Heroes

On August 15, from 11am to 4pm, the American Legion Post 21, 16701 E 4o Hwy, Indep. Mo. 64050 and the Veterans Administration Hospital staff will be honoring those veterans of the OIF/OEF at a social. Also, they will be honoring the fallen soldiers from that conflict and the Gold Star families. Several of the portraits done by the artists group, Grateful Hearts Project(of which I am the founder) will be on display during the event.

Teaching Buddy that "touch " is a good thing

Well, Buddy and I are trying a new approach to his fear of people. I offer him my fingers in front of me and if he touches them, I say "touch" and give him a treat. This way I hope to encourage him to see that not all humans that move forward towards him just do bad things to him. We have also started having other families members put treats on the floor and put them closer and closer to them if he follows the "treat trail". Our goal is for him to actually take treats out of other human hands besides mine.

His potty training is going great! No accidents in the house this week at all. He now starts pacing and goes to the door to let me know that he needs outside. I still crate him when I'm going to be gone. I think that the other animals have helped him in his potty training accomplishment.

He also ventures out of the studio every once in awhile on his own to explore. Even when I'm not going with him. I still leave his leash on his halter as he is still hard to catch when he gets scared and starts to run, but he is now off the leash more and more in the studio.

We are hoping for another great training session tomorrow night where he stays out from under the chair like last session. I'm hoping that he will also feel comfortable enough to take treats during the class even with all the distractions.

Buddy at doggy obedience class-2nd week

Buddy is learning how to be a dog/companion. The two top photos are of Buddy in my art studio,where he and I hang out the most. Miko, our other Shih Tsu hangs out there with him. She has really been more active and doesn't spend all her time in the closet since Buddy came. Buddy is helping her,and all of us, get over the loss of our precious Wizzy.

The third photo is of Buddy walking on his leash. He spent almost the whole class out from under my chair-huge improvement. He walked on a leash around the whole area with all the other dogs and their owners. Yeah! His tail is much more often up than down now. I am having other family members walk him also so he doesn't stay so focused on me and can begin to enjoy the company of other humans. We try and introduce people slowly to him so he doesn't get overwhelmed.

We gave him a bath yesterday and he did really well with that. He is also now taking treats from my hand and sometimes from other people's hands too. He still prefers it to be quiet but we are working on that. Our short term goal is to get him to take treats even with distractions-he will need to do this for class learning. Baby steps!

Buddy, the WIP

In art, WIP means a work in progress. That applies to my little Buddy too. We seem to take four steps forward and two back, but we hang in there. He was taking treats out of my hands(which is crucial to doggy training) but then he was distracted when we tried to do it around other family members and animals. So now we are back to laying the treats on the floor in a pattern which he will eat very close to me but not out of my hand, even if he is hungry.(like before breakfast or dinner) He however, is great at going outside to do his business-he has that trick down pat!
Today, we go for our first grooming experience with our groomer. This is an unknown as the only other time he was groomed was by the rescue group when they had to shave him because of all the matted hair after years of neglect by the breeder. We'll keep you posted on how this goes. Also, we have our second doggy class tonight. Our goal tonight is to just spend most of our time out from underneath the chair. Baby steps!

Holyfield Winery Plein Aire Painting

I spent the afternoon at Holyfield Winery Saturday painting in plein aire(my favorite thing to do). This is the painting I completed that day. I know, why a pond at a winery? Well, there were wonderful views to paint everywhere-grapes, grape vines, an apple orchard, wine barrels, beautiful skies but I am always drawn to the water. I love painting water, all kinds, rushing-still-cascading-it all intrigues me. This pond had algae completely covering the surface of the pond. There was a lone tree growing out of the water and casting wonderful shadows across the pond's surface. The painting took me about 2 hours and seemed to just "paint itself". I also did a couple more paintings there which I will post in a later post.

Also, for those who are following Buddy's journey. He is doing great. I get tail wags every time he sees me and he is asking to be let out to "do his business". This morning he even stood still while I put his leash on and didn't try to exit the situation. He ran to me after he did his stuff with his little tail wagging to beat the band and ran right to me for pets and praise. He loves being outside and since our yard is fenced securely, we allow him freedom but still with his halter and leash attached just in case something were to spook him and we would need to try and catch him. He's really fast when he wants to elude you.

Buddy gives me a heartattack!

Well, I learned a valuable lesson today. Buddy is doing remarkably well but I on the other hand got a little too cocky about his progress and let my guard down. We had a productive treat training session this morning and so I took Buddy with me to the bank and some errands in the car. When we got back, his halter was too tight so I took it off and attached the leash to his collar. I closed the garage door(thank the Lord) and put him on the floor still holding his leash. When we got to the stairs leading up to the kitchen, he balked(must have been a different feel and look than the stairs in the house he has conquered) well, he pulled right out of his collar and the result was his panicking and running all over the garage and basement with me in hot pursuit. I finally got calmed down(one of us had too) and he finally came close enough for me to get him under control. Note to self-despite progress-we are not ready for the big time so back goes the harness and the leash. Oh did I mention he is asking to go outside to do his business now? Progress comes in small rewards but they are sooooo worth it.

The Cove in Springtime

The "Cove in Springtime" is a pastel that I started in the field earlier this spring when the redbuds were blooming. This is a cove I have painted many times and is one of favorite places at Lake Jacomo. It was a little overcast that day but the sun would peek thru in spots and deliver these delicious streams of light. It was hard to decide which direction to paint. I had forgotten about the painting until I found a photo of it in my old camera. Finally, I found the actual painting in a stack that had made its way to the back of my cubby. Since I paint almost everyday outside, it is sometimes easy to lose track of the plein aire works in my studio. Finding this painting brought back wonderful memories of the day and the season. It was enjoyable to finish the painting and remember the day. We had a glorious spring this year. Hope you enjoy and remember the spring too.

Painting for the City of Lenexa show in August

Buddy and I went out for our morning walk-he was a really good boy and did all his business. I got a huge tail wag this morning, in fact, his tail is more up than down between his legs now. I know this sounds silly, but tails in the air are a very very good thing!

Today, I am going to get my painting ready to deliver to Karen Lyman for the CF Foundation fundraiser. She let me know that it didn't have to be framed just backed and in a clear bag. Yeah-I hate framing!

I am going to work on a painting that I had started in Taos, New Mexico today and see if I can get finished or at least close to finished. I also have a painting I need to get framed for the MidAmerica Pastel Society show coming up at the City Hall of Lenexa Gallery in August.

Buddy and I might go plein air painting at Lake Jacomo tomorrow. I feel the need to get out of the studio. Of course, I do have the paint out at Holyfield Winery in Basehor, Ks coming up this Saturday-that should be fun.

Scooter and Mickey

Buddy went to Doggy class with his friend Scooter tonight. Scooter is a great influence as she knows how to sit, down, shake, roll over and crawl already. Her daddy and grandma discovered this by accident and are excited. At first Buddy was really really scared and spent the time under my chair. Slowly he began to come out and sit beside me or in front of me. Everyone was sitting at first but when it came time to stand and start working with their dogs, it was under the chair again. After awhile, he ventured back out. We discuss with Lotta, our trainer, ways to make him more comfortable. He is totally NOT FOOD MOTIVATED so she gave us a way to practice trying to get him to take food from our hand. We will practice this at home this week. For our first night at class we worked on coming out from under mom's chair and walking on our leash around other dogs. This week at home we will work on having people come in and NOT get down on the floor so he can be more comfortable around people. Afterall, we can't expect all our visitors to always get down on the floor. We are also going to work on taking treats from human hands and walking on our leash. That's quite enough for our first class assignment.

Buddy's Big Day-Doggy Obediance Class Begins

Well, we survived another night. Buddy once again slept on our bed with us. Once he settles in he is gone for the night-it's nice to know that he feels secure enough to sleep peacefully. Tiger,you remember him-the alpha momma's boy, he is still having a little issue with sharing the bed with Buddy but he is getting over it.
Buddy didn't eat last night-I think his tummy is still adjusting to the new food. We have him on Science Diet. He ate a little grass last night while on his walk-hope he's not a vegetarian!
This morning though he went over to the counter in my studio where I keep his food and stood by his food bowl. So I put a little in and he ate it no problem. He didn't even have to have Simba, his cat pal, taste it first. Guess he now trusts that we are not trying to poison him.
After he ate breakfast he went to the back door and stood-I'm reluctant to get too excited that he really knew he was trying to tell me he needed out-but out we went and he did his business. YEAH!!!
Tonight is a big deal for Buddy-we are going to doggy obedience class with Scooter and Mickey. I fed him lightly this morning so hopefully he will take treats at the class. It will be a little difficult to train him as he is totally not food motivated. Al,the trainer, said to not feed him much today in hopes that that will spark his wanting the treats. We are also going to have to find something really smelling to tempt his taste buds. Our two successful choices so far are salami and chicken-so that's what we are going to try.

Buddy and I went to the committee meeting today at Summit Art and met some new friends. He was really good and stayed quiet for the whole meeting. I let him come out at the end to meet Tom, Ramon, and Carole. He was shy but did allow Tom to pet him under his chin. It was a good opportunity to tell more people about the puppy mill abuse and the plight of not only Buddy but others like him.
Then we went to pick up my nephew and back home for a day of new and exciting things to learn and experience. We are all still sitting on the floor as Buddy gets a little freaked out by new people towering above him.
Everytime I leave the studio when I come back I get a huge tail wag. It's just awesome.
He is not eating tonight. His tummy is growling and rumbling. He is still adjusting to the new food. We are still trying to figure out what will tempt him as far as treats to use in his class tomorrow night. He is totally not food motivated-should be interesting.
